A change of underwear addresses sensitive issue in children

Itching, soreness and inflammation of the genital area in women can be embarrassing at the best of times, but when the condition arises in very young girls, the subject needs to be handled with the utmost sensitivity. New clinical research conducted by the Dermatology Department at the University of Bologna may provide a solution that will minimise the distress of Paediatric Inflammatory Vulvitis or (PIV)  for both the child and the parents, because it’s a treatment that parents can introduce yet remain totally discreet.

The medical trial was carried out on a group of 12 young girls between the ages of 2 and 10 years who had suffered repeated flare ups of PIV. In some, this was due to a topical infection, whilst in others, there was no obvious cause.  In all cases, the girls experienced intense itching, inflammation and soreness.

Those without any identified infection were given conventional treatment of either washing with aqueous cream or emulsifying ointment, and those with infections were given antibiotic or antifungal treatments. All the girls were also provided with special briefs made from medical grade silk (DermaSilk) to wear instead of their usual briefs made from cotton or man-made materials.

After 30 days all the girls showed significant improvement, and after 3 months the lesions had completely disappeared in 11 out of the 12 patients. More importantly the number of outbreaks of PIV reduced from 60 events in the 3 months prior to the study to only 3 in the same period after the study.

The researcher’s findings were, “DermaSilk briefs were demonstrated to play an important role in the management of flares of recurrent PIV, proven by earlier resolution of symptoms, as well as maintenance of the remission and in the prevention of overinfection.”

At the end of the trial the parents were contacted and all were so impressed with the results that they confirmed that they wanted their daughters to continue wearing DermaSilk briefs on a daily basis instead of the normal underwear.

These new biofunctional briefs are made from medical grade silk which is protected by a permanently bonded antimicrobial agent. DermaSilk has been  successfully prescribed for a number of years in the management of conditions characterised by severe itching and soreness such as eczema and atopic dermatitis. Recent trials have also shown that DermaSilk briefs are very effective in treating vaginal thrush infections, so their effectiveness in treating PIV should be no surprise.

Amazing that something as simple as a change of underwear can be such an effective way to deal with a sensitive issue.
